Company intelligence / Profile preview
Companhia Latino Americana de Antibióticos (CLAA) was a major Brazilian pharmaceutical manufacturer specializing in the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), specifically beta-lactam antibiotics. Based in Cosmópolis, São Paulo, the company operated one of the largest and most sophisticated fermentation plants in the Southern Hemisphere, designed to produce penicillin and cephalosporin precursors. CLAA was a strategic industrial initiative aimed at increasing Brazil's self-sufficiency in essential medicines, but it faced significant financial difficulties and entered bankruptcy in the early 2000s. Its industrial assets were eventually acquired by Antibióticos do Brasil (ABL), which continued operations at the site and was later integrated into the Eurofarma group in 2023. The facility remains a critical hub for the supply of injectable antibiotics in the Brazilian healthcare market.
