Company intelligence / Profile preview
Cilco Inc., originally founded as the California Intraocular Lens Co. in 1975, was a pioneering medical device company that played a critical role in the development and commercialization of intraocular lenses (IOLs). The company became a major player in the ophthalmic market during the late 1970s and early 1980s, particularly after moving its headquarters to Huntington, West Virginia. Cilco was instrumental in advancing the use of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and other materials for artificial lens implantation following cataract surgery. In 1984, the company was acquired by Alcon Laboratories, then a division of Nestlé, which solidified Alcon's global leadership in the surgical eye care sector. Today, Cilco's legacy continues through Alcon's extensive portfolio of intraocular lenses and surgical ophthalmic products.
