Cintichem

Cintichem was a specialized radiopharmaceutical company based in Tuxedo, New York, primarily known for operating a nuclear reactor to produce medical radioisotopes. Originally a subsidiary of Union Carbide, the company was acquired by Hoffman-La Roche in 1984 to secure a supply of isotopes like Technetium-99m and Iodine-131 for diagnostic and therapeutic use. At its peak, Cintichem was a major supplier of the world's Molybdenum-99, a precursor for the most widely used medical imaging agent. The facility was a critical component of the nuclear medicine infrastructure in the United States for several decades. However, the facility was shut down in 1990 following the discovery of radioactive leaks, leading to a comprehensive decommissioning process that concluded in the early 2000s.
