Circa Pharmaceuticals was a generic pharmaceutical company based in Copiague, New York, that operated as the successor to Bolar Pharmaceutical Co. The company underwent a name change in 1991 following a major industry scandal involving the submission of fraudulent data to the FDA, which led to the de-listing of several of its products. Despite its troubled history, Circa maintained a significant portfolio of generic small molecule drugs targeting cardiovascular, psychiatric, and neurological conditions. In 1995, the company was acquired by Watson Pharmaceuticals in a stock-for-stock transaction valued at approximately $600 million. This acquisition provided Watson with a robust manufacturing base and a broader range of generic offerings, facilitating its growth into a global pharmaceutical leader.
