Cistron Biotechnology was a biopharmaceutical company that pioneered research into the Interleukin-1 (IL-1) cytokine system, a key mediator of inflammation. The company was notably the first to clone the human IL-1 beta gene, which allowed it to establish a foundational patent portfolio in the field of inflammatory disease treatment. Cistron's business strategy focused on the development of IL-1 antagonists and the licensing of its intellectual property to major pharmaceutical companies for the development of blockbuster drugs. Its research contributed significantly to the understanding and treatment of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and septic shock. In 2001, the company was acquired by Genzyme Corporation to consolidate IL-1 related therapeutic and diagnostic rights.
