Coastal Physician Group

Coastal Physician Group was a prominent physician practice management (PPM) company that specialized in providing contract staffing and management services for hospital emergency departments. Founded in 1977 and based in Durham, North Carolina, the company became a pioneer in the outsourcing of clinical services and was publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange. At its peak, it managed thousands of physicians across the United States and expanded its operations into primary care and managed care services. However, the company suffered from aggressive over-leveraging and shifts in the healthcare reimbursement landscape during the mid-1990s. These financial pressures led to a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 1997, followed by the liquidation of its assets and the cessation of operations.
