Cognitive Pharmaceuticals was a biotechnology company based in Toledo, Ohio, focused on the development of small molecule therapeutics for central nervous system disorders, particularly Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. The company's primary research centered on selective muscarinic M1 receptor agonists, which were designed to improve cognitive function and potentially slow disease progression by mimicking the action of acetylcholine in the brain. Its lead candidate, CDD-0102, was developed to be highly selective for the M1 receptor to avoid the gastrointestinal and cardiovascular side effects associated with non-selective muscarinic drugs. In 2008, Cognitive Pharmaceuticals merged with Mithridion Inc, which continued the development of the lead compound (renamed MCD-386) into Phase 1 clinical trials. The combined company eventually ceased operations in 2013.
