Coley Pharmaceutical Group was a biopharmaceutical company that pioneered the development of Toll-like receptor (TLR) therapeutics, a class of drugs designed to direct the human immune system to fight or prevent disease. The company's core technology focused on CpG oligonucleotides, synthetic DNA sequences that mimic the immune-stimulating properties of bacterial DNA by targeting TLR9. Their lead product candidates, including ProMune and Actilon, were evaluated in clinical trials for indications such as non-small cell lung cancer, melanoma, and chronic hepatitis C. Coley established significant strategic alliances with major pharmaceutical companies like GSK and Sanofi-Aventis before being acquired by Pfizer in 2008.
