Commercial Solvents

Commercial Solvents Corporation was a pioneering American chemical and biotechnology company best known for its industrial-scale use of fermentation processes. Founded in 1919, the company commercialized the Weizmann process to produce acetone and n-butanol, which were critical for the munitions and automotive industries. In the mid-20th century, it became a significant player in the pharmaceutical industry as one of the first mass producers of penicillin. The company also manufactured the anti-tuberculosis drug ethambutol and was central to a landmark European competition law case regarding the supply of drug intermediates. Beyond pharmaceuticals, its portfolio included agricultural chemicals, industrial solvents, and carbon black. The company was eventually acquired by International Minerals and Chemical Corporation in 1975.
