Conceptus

Conceptus was a medical device company focused on developing minimally invasive solutions for women's health, most notably the Essure permanent birth control system. Essure was a non-surgical procedure that involved placing small metal and fiber coils into the fallopian tubes to induce a natural tissue barrier that prevents pregnancy. Founded in 1992 and headquartered in Mountain View, California, the company successfully navigated the FDA approval process to bring the first hysteroscopic sterilization device to the U.S. market. In 2013, Conceptus was acquired by Bayer for approximately $1.1 billion, integrating its technology into Bayer's global women's healthcare portfolio. Despite its initial commercial success, the Essure product was eventually discontinued worldwide due to safety concerns and a high volume of patient litigation.
