Company intelligence / Profile preview
Continental Oil Company, now part of ConocoPhillips, was a major energy corporation that historically maintained a significant presence in the pharmaceutical and life sciences sectors. The company's most prominent healthcare involvement was through its subsidiary, Continental Pharma S.A., a Belgian research firm it owned from 1971 to 1984. Continental Pharma is globally recognized for the discovery of piracetam, the first nootropic drug, which pioneered a new class of cognitive enhancers. Additionally, Continental Oil was a leading producer of high-purity USP-grade white mineral oils and petrolatums, which are essential components in various pharmaceutical formulations and medical ointments. The company eventually divested its pharmaceutical assets to Monsanto's G.D. Searle division to focus on its core energy operations.
