Crompton and Knowles

Crompton & Knowles was a prominent American specialty chemical company that played a significant role in the pharmaceutical and food industries through its production of dyes, flavors, and ingredient technologies. Originally founded as a textile machinery manufacturer in the 19th century, the company pivoted to specialty chemicals, becoming a leading supplier of pharmaceutical-grade colorants and excipients. Through its Ingredient Technology Corporation subsidiary, it provided specialized chemical solutions that supported the life sciences sector. In 1999, Crompton & Knowles merged with Witco Corporation to form Crompton Corporation, which later became part of Chemtura. The business was eventually acquired by the specialty chemicals giant Lanxess in 2017. The company's legacy in the life sciences is primarily tied to its high-purity chemical additives and ingredient systems used in drug formulation and medical diagnostics.
