Cumbre Pharmaceuticals

Cumbre Pharmaceuticals was a Dallas-based biotechnology company dedicated to developing next-generation antibiotics to combat multi-drug resistant bacterial pathogens. The company was founded in 2000 by a group of experienced scientists formerly with Merck's infectious disease division. Its primary technological focus was the creation of "multivalent" or hybrid small molecules that could simultaneously inhibit multiple bacterial targets. The lead candidate, CBR-2092, was a rifamycin-quinolone hybrid designed to target RNA polymerase, DNA gyrase, and topoisomerase IV. While the compound reached Phase 2 clinical trials for the treatment of complicated skin and skin structure infections, the company eventually ceased operations in 2009. Cumbre's approach represented a significant attempt to address the rising threat of antibiotic resistance through structural innovation.
