Cutter Biologics

Cutter Biologics was a prominent American pharmaceutical company specializing in the production of blood-derived products and vaccines. Originally part of Cutter Laboratories, the company was a leader in the development of clotting factor concentrates for hemophilia and immune globulin therapies. In 1974, the company was acquired by Bayer, and its Berkeley-based manufacturing facilities became a core part of Bayer's global biotechnology operations. The company is historically significant for its role in early vaccine production, including the Salk polio vaccine, and the development of life-saving treatments for rare blood disorders. Today, the legacy of Cutter Biologics continues through Bayer's portfolio of recombinant and plasma-derived hematology treatments. Its Berkeley site remains one of the largest biotechnology employers in the San Francisco Bay Area.
