Company intelligence / Profile preview
CymBlood was a biotechnology spin-off company from the University of Essex, founded to develop a safe, cell-free artificial blood substitute. The company's technology focused on engineering recombinant human hemoglobin to overcome the historical toxicities associated with Hemoglobin-Based Oxygen Carriers (HBOCs). By introducing specific tyrosine mutations (such as βT84Y and βF41Y) and novel reactive cysteine residues, CymBlood's platform facilitated site-specific PEGylation and enhanced the reduction of toxic ferryl and ferric heme species. These modifications aimed to prevent rapid renal clearance, decrease oxidative stress, and increase vascular retention, making the oxygen therapeutics suitable for emergency transfusions in trauma, blood loss, and ischemic conditions.
