Company intelligence / Profile preview
Cytosol Ophthalmics was a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on the development and manufacture of ophthalmic solutions used during surgical procedures. Based in Lenexa, Kansas, the company's primary product line included Balanced Salt Solutions (BSS) and BSS Plus. These products are essential for maintaining the physiological integrity of ocular tissues during intraocular surgeries, such as cataract removal and vitrectomy. In December 2006, Cytosol was acquired by Akorn, Inc. for approximately $18.8 million to bolster Akorn's ophthalmic surgical portfolio. Following the acquisition, Cytosol's manufacturing facility became a key part of Akorn's production infrastructure for sterile liquids. The company is no longer active as an independent entity, and its parent company, Akorn, ceased operations in 2023.
