DarPharma, Inc. was a biotechnology company based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, focused on the discovery and development of first-in-class pharmaceuticals for neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders. The company specialized in the development of full dopamine D1 receptor (D1R) agonists, a class of compounds designed to treat cognitive and motor impairments by targeting the prefrontal cortex. Its lead candidate, DAR-0100 (dihydrexidine), was the first full D1 agonist to enter clinical trials for schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease. Founded in 2000 by researchers from the University of North Carolina and Purdue University, DarPharma merged with BioValve Technologies in 2005. Although the company is no longer independent, its pioneering work laid the foundation for ongoing research into D1-targeted therapies for cognitive enhancement.
