Definium Therapeutics

Definium Therapeutics was a San Diego-based biotechnology company dedicated to the discovery and development of novel small molecule therapies for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and related metabolic disorders. The company’s primary research focus centered on inhibitors of 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11beta-HSD1), an enzyme involved in the conversion of inactive cortisone to active cortisol. By targeting this mechanism, Definium aimed to modulate glucose production and improve insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues. In June 2005, the company was acquired by Merck & Co., which integrated Definium's metabolic disease programs into its own internal research and development pipeline. The acquisition bolstered Merck's early-stage portfolio in the competitive diabetes and obesity therapeutic areas.
