Denver Biomedical

Denver Biomedical was a medical device company specializing in the development and manufacture of innovative products for the management of chronic pleural effusions and ascites. The company is most notably recognized for developing the PleurX Drainage System, which allows patients to manage fluid buildup at home rather than in a hospital setting. Founded in Golden, Colorado, the company also produced the Denver Shunt for treating refractory ascites. These technologies significantly improved the quality of life for patients with late-stage cancers and other conditions causing fluid accumulation. In 2006, the company was acquired by Cardinal Health for approximately $150 million. Following subsequent corporate spin-offs and acquisitions, the Denver Biomedical product portfolio is now owned and marketed by Becton Dickinson (BD).
