Desicorp was a biotechnology company focused on the development of technologies for the long-term stabilization and preservation of red blood cells. The company's primary innovation was a lyophilization (freeze-drying) process that allowed red blood cells to be stored at room temperature and rehydrated for use in transfusions. This technology was designed to address the limitations of traditional blood storage, which requires refrigeration and has a short shelf life, making it particularly valuable for military and emergency medical applications. Desicorp's research was supported by collaborations with the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory and aimed to provide a stable blood supply in resource-limited environments. In May 2002, the company's assets and intellectual property were acquired by Enzon Pharmaceuticals for approximately 1.5 million. The acquisition was intended to complement Enzon's existing portfolio of oxygen-carrying therapeutics.
