Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute

MxD, formerly the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII), is a Chicago-based non-profit research institute and a member of the Manufacturing USA network. Launched in 2014 in partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense, MxD serves as a hub for digital manufacturing innovation, cybersecurity, and workforce development. The institute operates a 22,000-square-foot "Future Factory" floor where it demonstrates advanced technologies such as digital twins, augmented reality, and AI-driven production. MxD has a significant healthcare portfolio, including initiatives to optimize pharmaceutical production and accelerate the deployment of medical devices in collaboration with the FDA and the Department of Defense. By convening a consortium of over 300 partners from industry, academia, and government, MxD aims to enhance national security and economic prosperity by making manufacturing more resilient and competitive.
