The Distillers Company (Biochemicals) Limited was a significant British pharmaceutical manufacturer and a subsidiary of the spirits conglomerate The Distillers Company. Established in 1947, the company utilized its parent's fermentation expertise to operate a major production facility in Speke, Liverpool, becoming a leading producer of penicillin and streptomycin. The firm is most historically notable for its role in the thalidomide tragedy, having licensed and marketed the drug in the United Kingdom and Australia under the brand name Distaval. Following the drug's withdrawal and the subsequent legal crisis, the biochemical division was sold to Eli Lilly in 1962. The company's legacy is inextricably linked to the development of modern drug safety regulations and pharmacovigilance.
