Distillers Company Biochemicals (DCBL) was a prominent British pharmaceutical manufacturer and a subsidiary of The Distillers Company, originally established to leverage the parent company's fermentation expertise for antibiotic production. The company operated a major facility in Speke, Liverpool, where it became one of the UK's primary producers of penicillin and streptomycin during the post-war era. DCBL is most historically significant for marketing thalidomide under the brand name Distaval in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries starting in 1958. Following the global thalidomide tragedy and the drug's withdrawal in 1961, the company faced massive legal liabilities and public scrutiny. In 1962, the pharmaceutical interests of DCBL were sold to Eli Lilly, effectively ending the company's independent operations in the life sciences sector.
