Founded in 1998 and based in Fremont, California, the company was a leader in the early field of pharmacogenomics. Its flagship initiative, the 'Gene Trust,' utilized the internet to recruit thousands of volunteers to contribute DNA samples and medical histories for large-scale research. The company aimed to discover single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that could serve as diagnostic markers or targets for personalized medicine. Despite significant venture capital backing and a high-profile scientific advisory board led by James D. Watson, the company faced financial difficulties during the post-dot-com era. It was ultimately acquired by Genaissance Pharmaceuticals in 2003, and its assets were integrated into subsequent genomic research efforts.
