Dnax Research Institute

DNAX Research Institute was a premier biotechnology research organization based in Palo Alto, California, that fundamentally shaped the field of modern immunology. Founded in 1980 by Alejandro Zaffaroni and a distinguished group of Nobel laureates, the institute became world-renowned for its pioneering work in cytokine discovery and the characterization of T-helper cell subsets (Th1 and Th2). DNAX researchers were responsible for cloning and identifying numerous interleukins, including IL-4, IL-5, IL-10, and IL-23, which later became critical targets for blockbuster drugs. Although acquired by Schering-Plough in 1982, it maintained a high degree of scientific autonomy for decades, operating as a prolific engine for drug discovery. Following the 2009 merger of Schering-Plough and Merck & Co., the institute was fully integrated into Merck Research Laboratories, leaving a lasting legacy in the treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
