Originally established in 1853 as the Royal Victoria Hospital, it was renamed in 2013 to honor the Gambian nationalist and labor leader Edward Francis Small. The hospital serves as the primary clinical training site for the University of The Gambia's School of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences. It provides a comprehensive range of specialized medical services, including internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology.
