Elanex Pharmaceuticals was a biopharmaceutical company specializing in the development of recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO) for treating anemia. The company was notable for its proprietary mammalian cell expression technology used to produce high-quality EPO. Elanex established a significant global presence by licensing its EPO technology to major international pharmaceutical partners, including Boehringer Mannheim and Sankyo. The company played a prominent role in the complex patent litigation surrounding EPO production during the 1990s. In 2001, Elanex was acquired by Inhale Therapeutic Systems, which later rebranded as Nektar Therapeutics. The acquisition was valued at approximately $135 million and aimed to combine Elanex's protein expertise with advanced drug delivery technologies.
