Eligo Bioscience has achieved a world-first demonstration of highly efficient, specific genome editing of gut bacteria using engineered phage capsids carrying base editors. Their preclinical data show nearly complete removal or modification of target genes without disturbing non-targeted microbial communities. The company’s lead asset targets moderate-to-severe acne by selectively disabling virulence factors in Cutibacterium acnes. IND-enabling studies are ongoing with plans for first-in-human trials soon.
