Epi-Ret

Epi-Ret was a German medical technology company focused on the development of epiretinal prostheses to restore vision in patients with degenerative retinal diseases. The company's flagship product, the Epi-Ret 3, was a fully implantable, wireless retinal stimulator designed to bypass damaged photoreceptors and directly stimulate retinal ganglion cells. Developed through a multi-institutional consortium in Germany, the device aimed to provide functional vision to individuals blinded by conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa. The system was unique for its wireless design, which eliminated the need for trans-scleral cables, potentially reducing surgical complications. While the technology demonstrated technical feasibility in early clinical trials, the company is no longer active in the commercial market.
