Founded in 1987 and based in Madison, Wisconsin, Epicentre Biotechnologies was a leading manufacturer of molecular biology products such as specialty enzymes and nucleic acid sample preparation reagents. Its technologies—most notably Nextera for rapid NGS library prep and Ribo-Zero for ribosomal RNA removal—were widely adopted by academic and commercial labs globally. In January 2011 it was acquired by Illumina to enhance their sample preparation portfolio.
