Equicor was a prominent managed healthcare company established in 1986 as a joint venture between the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) and the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States. The company specialized in providing group life and health insurance, as well as managed care services including Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs). At its peak, Equicor was one of the largest employee benefits companies in the United States, serving millions of members across various states. In 1990, the company was acquired by CIGNA Corporation for approximately $777 million, a move that significantly expanded CIGNA's presence in the managed care market.
