Carlo Erba was a landmark Italian pharmaceutical company founded in 1853 by pharmacist Carlo Erba in Milan. It holds a significant place in medical history as the first industrial pharmaceutical company in Italy and for its groundbreaking research in oncology, which led to the discovery of essential chemotherapy drugs like doxorubicin (Adriamycin) and epirubicin. The company merged with Farmitalia in 1978 to form Farmitalia Carlo Erba, which was later acquired by Pharmacia in 1993 and subsequently by Pfizer in 2003. Today, the Carlo Erba legacy persists through its portfolio of life-saving oncology treatments and the separate CARLO ERBA Reagents business.
