Farmitalia-Carlo Erba

Farmitalia-Carlo Erba was a prominent Italian pharmaceutical company formed in 1978 through the merger of Farmitalia and Carlo Erba. The company achieved global recognition for its pioneering research in oncology, particularly for the discovery and development of the anthracycline class of chemotherapy drugs, including doxorubicin (Adriamycin) and epirubicin. Beyond its oncology leadership, the firm maintained a diverse portfolio in infectious diseases, cardiovascular health, and endocrinology. In 1993, the company was acquired by the Swedish firm Pharmacia, and through subsequent mergers, its legacy and products eventually became part of Pfizer. Its contributions to cancer treatment remain foundational to modern oncology.
