Fibrocell Science was a clinical-stage cell and gene therapy company focused on developing personalized biologics for rare and debilitating skin and connective tissue diseases. The company utilized its proprietary autologous fibroblast technology to create localized therapies, most notably Azficel-T (LAVIV), the first FDA-approved autologous cell therapy for aesthetic use. At the time of its acquisition by Castle Creek Biosciences, its lead gene therapy candidate, FCX-007, was in late-stage development for recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. The company's approach involved extracting a patient's own skin cells, genetically modifying them if necessary, and re-injecting them to treat the underlying cause of the disease. Fibrocell's manufacturing and technical operations were primarily conducted through its subsidiary, Fibrocell Technologies.
