Flagship Labs is the institutional innovation foundry of Flagship Pioneering, dedicated to systematically conceiving, creating, and resourcing first-in-category bioplatform companies. It operates through a unique hypothesis-driven process where internal teams of scientist-entrepreneurs explore 'white spaces' in biology to develop 'ProtoCos' (prototype companies). These ventures, often designated with 'FL' numbers during their stealth phase, evolve into independent entities such as Moderna, Generate Biomedicines, and Tessera Therapeutics. Flagship Labs focuses on transformative technologies in human health and sustainability, leveraging an ecosystem of over 40 active companies. Through its Pioneering Medicines initiative, the unit also collaborates with major pharmaceutical partners like Pfizer and Novo Nordisk to advance a pipeline of novel therapeutic assets.
