Focal Medica

Focal Medical is a North Carolina-founded biopharmaceutical and medical device company focused on localized, energy-based drug delivery for solid tumors. Its core platform uses implantable iontophoresis to drive therapeutics directly into diseased tissue, with the goal of increasing local drug exposure while reducing systemic toxicity. The company's lead program, ACT-IOP-003, pairs an implantable iontophoretic device with gemcitabine for locally advanced nonresectable pancreatic cancer and had received IND clearance for a first-in-human Phase 1b study. Focal Medical also disclosed earlier-stage programs in oral cavity cancer and melanoma. In June 2025, the company was acquired by Continuity Biosciences, which integrated Focal's patent estate, R&D capabilities, and UNC-linked licensing agreements into its precision-delivery portfolio.
