Gen-Probe was a pioneering molecular diagnostics company specializing in nucleic acid testing to rapidly detect infectious diseases such as HIV‑1, hepatitis viruses, West Nile virus, as well as providing blood screening solutions for transfusion safety and organ transplantation. The company developed the first commercial nucleic acid tests that significantly reduced diagnostic turnaround times. Its APTIMA product line became a leading solution in women’s health diagnostics. At the time of its acquisition by Hologic in August 2012 for approximately $3.7–$3.8 billion cash, Gen-Probe had multiple commercialized products with global reach through direct sales and partnerships.
