General Host Corporation was a prominent American conglomerate that operated primarily in the food processing and retail sectors throughout the 20th century. Originally founded as the General Baking Company in 1911, it became widely known for its Hostess brand of snack cakes and bread products. Over the decades, the company diversified into various industries, including meatpacking through its acquisition of Cudahy Foods and specialty retail via Frank's Nursery & Crafts. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, the company faced significant financial challenges, leading to the divestiture of its major brands and the eventual bankruptcy and liquidation of its remaining retail operations.
