General Surgical Innovations (GSI) was a pioneering medical technology company that specialized in balloon-based tissue dissection and access systems for minimally invasive surgery. Founded in 1992 by the renowned surgeon and inventor Dr. Thomas Fogarty, the company developed proprietary technology that used inflatable balloons to create operative space and visualize anatomy through small incisions. Its flagship products, including the Spacemaker and VasoView systems, revolutionized procedures such as laparoscopic hernia repair and endoscopic saphenous vein harvesting for bypass surgery. GSI successfully addressed the challenge of creating a working cavity in non-hollow anatomical areas, significantly reducing patient trauma and recovery times. The company was acquired by Tyco International in 1999 and its technologies are now part of the Medtronic surgical portfolio.
