GeneSense Therapeutics

GeneSense Therapeutics was a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on developing adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapies for rare, fatal lysosomal storage disorders. Spun out of the University of Massachusetts Medical School and Auburn University, the company specialized in CNS-targeted treatments for GM1 gangliosidosis and Tay-Sachs disease. Its lead programs utilized AAV9 and AAVrh8 vectors to deliver functional genes directly to the brain and spinal cord. In December 2018, GeneSense was acquired by Axovant Sciences (later renamed Sio Gene Sciences) for $8 million in cash. The acquisition integrated GeneSense's pipeline into Axovant's broader gene therapy portfolio, leading to the initiation of first-in-human clinical trials for GM1 gangliosidosis. Although the programs showed clinical promise, development was eventually discontinued following the dissolution of the parent company in 2023.
