Genoptera

Genoptera was a biotechnology joint venture established in 2000 between Exelixis and Bayer CropScience to leverage genomics for the discovery of novel insecticides. The company utilized Exelixis's proprietary Drosophila (fruit fly) genetics platform and comparative genomics to identify and validate molecular targets for agricultural applications. By applying high-throughput screening technologies typically used in pharmaceutical drug discovery, Genoptera aimed to develop environmentally safe and effective crop protection solutions. The collaboration was a pioneer in AgBio genomics but eventually concluded as Exelixis shifted its primary strategic focus toward human oncology therapeutics.
