Genset was a pioneer in human genome research and pharmacogenomics, launching large-scale genomic mapping and SNP analysis programs. It initiated the first pharmacogenomics research program globally in collaboration with Abbott Laboratories. Genset was the European flagship in genomics, becoming the second-largest biotech company in Europe by 1999. The company shifted to drug development after 2000 but was ultimately acquired by Serono in 2002 due to strategic challenges.
