Company intelligence / Profile preview
Gensia Pharmaceuticals was a San Diego-based biotechnology company primarily focused on the development of adenosine-regulating agents (ARAs) for cardiovascular and inflammatory conditions. The company's lead product, Genesa (arbutamine), was a pharmacological stress-testing agent approved for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease. Gensia also advanced acadesine into late-stage clinical trials for the prevention of adverse outcomes following coronary artery bypass graft surgery. In 1997, the company merged with Sicor to form Gensia Sicor, expanding its business into generic injectable pharmaceuticals. The combined entity was ultimately acquired by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries in 2004 for approximately $3.4 billion. During its independent operation, Gensia was recognized as a pioneer in the San Diego life sciences cluster.
