Gibela Therapeutics is a Swiss biotechnology startup spun off from the Cooperative Research Center in Biosciences (CIC bioGUNE) in Bilbao, Spain, and supported by the BaseLaunch incubator. Founded in 2024, the company is pioneering RNA-based therapeutics, specifically GalNAc-siRNA conjugates, to treat a wide range of liver and metabolic diseases. Gibela's therapeutic approach focuses on targeting the human gene CNNM4 (Metal transporter CNNM4) to restore magnesium homeostasis, thereby modulating mitochondrial activity and reducing endoplasmic reticulum stress. The company's preclinical pipeline targets high-prevalence and rare liver conditions, including metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), alcohol-related liver disease (ALD), and cholangiocarcinoma. Gibela is actively advancing its programs toward IND-enabling studies.
