Company intelligence / Profile preview
Gist-Brocades was a leading Dutch biotechnology and pharmaceutical company that specialized in the production of yeast, enzymes, and anti-infectives. Formed in 1967 through the merger of a yeast manufacturer and a pharmaceutical firm, the company became one of the world's largest producers of penicillin and other bulk antibiotics. It was a pioneer in industrial fermentation technology, applying these processes to create a wide range of enzymes for the food, beverage, and detergent industries. The company's pharmaceutical division focused heavily on the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and finished dosage forms for infectious diseases. In 1998, Gist-Brocades was acquired by the Dutch life sciences and materials sciences group DSM, where its operations were integrated into DSM's anti-infectives and food specialties units.
