Great Lakes Chemical Corporation was a major global producer of specialty chemicals, including flame retardants, polymer additives, and performance chemicals. In the life sciences sector, the company was a significant provider of fine chemicals and pharmaceutical intermediates, leveraging its expertise in bromine chemistry and complex organic synthesis. The company operated a dedicated Fine Chemicals business that served as a contract manufacturer for the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries. In 2005, Great Lakes Chemical merged with Crompton Corporation to form Chemtura Corporation, which was later acquired by the German specialty chemicals company LANXESS in 2017.
