Kaiser Permanente Washington, formerly known as Group Health Cooperative, is an integrated managed care organization based in Seattle, Washington. Established in 1947 as a consumer-governed cooperative, it was a pioneer in the health maintenance organization (HMO) model, providing both insurance and clinical services. The organization was acquired by Kaiser Permanente in February 2017, integrating its extensive network of clinics and medical staff into the national Kaiser Permanente system. Beyond clinical care, the entity is home to the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute, which conducts high-impact studies in areas such as vaccine safety, cancer prevention, and mental health. This research arm frequently collaborates with federal agencies like the NIH and CDC, making it a significant contributor to public health data and clinical guidelines. Today, it serves hundreds of thousands of members across Washington state, maintaining a focus on evidence-based medicine and preventive health.
