Guidant Corporation was a preeminent medical technology company that specialized in cardiovascular and endovascular solutions, particularly in the fields of cardiac rhythm management and vascular intervention. Spun off from Eli Lilly in 1994, the company became a global leader in the development of life-saving devices such as implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), pacemakers, and drug-eluting stents. In 2006, following a high-profile bidding war between Johnson & Johnson and Boston Scientific, Guidant was acquired by Boston Scientific for approximately $27 billion. As part of the transaction, Guidant's vascular intervention business was divested to Abbott Laboratories to satisfy antitrust requirements. The company's legacy remains significant through the widely used XIENCE stent platform and various cardiac technologies now integrated into the portfolios of its acquirers.
