Hance Brothers and White

Hance Brothers and White was a prominent 19th and early 20th-century pharmaceutical manufacturing firm based in Philadelphia. Founded in 1855, the company became a leader in the production of compressed tablets, fluid extracts, and proprietary medicines. They were widely recognized for their flagship product, Phenol Sodique, a versatile antiseptic and disinfectant, as well as their extensive line of fruit juices and syrups for the soda fountain industry. The firm played a significant role in the industrialization of pharmacy in the United States, helping transition the field from manual compounding to mass-produced medicinal dosages. After nearly a century of operation as a major supplier to druggists nationwide, the company eventually ceased operations in the mid-20th century.
