Overview

HandyLab was a medical technology company specializing in the development of automated molecular diagnostic systems based on microfluidic "lab-on-a-chip" technology. Founded in 2000 as a spin-off from the University of Michigan, the company focused on creating platforms that could perform rapid DNA and RNA extraction and amplification. Its primary products, the Jaguar and Raider systems, were designed to streamline complex laboratory workflows into a single, automated process. In 2009, HandyLab was acquired by BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) for approximately $275 million. Following the acquisition, HandyLab's technology served as the core architecture for the BD MAX system, a widely used platform for detecting infectious diseases and healthcare-associated infections.
